High-Tech cleanrooms for Batavia Biosciences

News

A brand-new
complex

In Leiden, the heart of biotech in the Netherlands, Batavia Biosciences’ brand-new complex now shines brightly. Jansen Cleanrooms & Labs handled the realization of the cleanrooms and laboratories. An impressive project where expertise and teamwork took center stage.

“More than 100 doors per floor”

The new Batavia Biosciences building spans an impressive 12,000 m² across 6 floors. It contains laboratories, cleanrooms, and offices for vaccine production.

“On behalf of VILS, we at Jansen Cleanrooms & Labs were responsible for the complete installation and fit-out. From HVAC, electrical systems, automation to Vinitex furniture,” explains Project Manager Sulémaan Roose enthusiastically: “It’s truly an imposing project. Not just the floors with cleanrooms and labs (which count more than 100 doors per floor!) but especially the intermediate floors that are completely equipped with technical systems. Only then do you see everything needed to make these high-tech spaces function.”

Flawless delivery

The project started in March 2024 and was delivered in May 2025. “Without any outstanding delivery points,” Sulémaan emphasizes. “That’s entirely thanks to the team. From the BIM planning to the site supervisors: everyone gave 110%, took responsibility, and always maintained solution-focused thinking. Beyond the flawless handover, we also passed all validation tests on the first attempt. That’s genuinely rare. They were truly amazed.”

During the week, the Jansen Cleanrooms & Labs team stayed at a hotel. “The Van Der Valk hotel became our second home. That had advantages: we created a really tight bond and could discuss project matters over dinner. Truly a top team, and we’ll definitely miss it!” Sulémaan says.

Challenging and sustainable

A project of this scale naturally presents challenges. Sulémaan still takes a deep breath discussing the air handling unit placement: “These had to be mounted on steel structures in the building. Due to circumstances, this wasn’t possible, and we had to devise an alternative. Together with our partners, we fortunately found a solution.”

Sustainability-wise, Batavia sets high standards. “To save energy, we implemented night regimes while maintaining strict air pressure and hygiene requirements. This approach results in serious energy consumption reduction,” Sulémaan explains.

Ready for the future

Batavia Biosciences is now fully operational and looks back with satisfaction on the collaboration. For Jansen Cleanrooms & Labs, this represents not only a beautiful realization but a calling card showcasing our craftsmanship and expertise. “When you walk around, you don’t know where to look. The finish is so good, the cleanrooms and technical systems so impressive… the entire team can look back with pride on a successful project where we pushed boundaries together,” concludes Sulémaan Roose.
